The Perforators are a group of Pre-Hardmode bosses fought in The Crimson. They consist of 3 worms with varying appearances, sizes, and behaviors, and a crimson, fleshy hive.

They are the Crimson counterpart to The Hive Mind.

Spawn[edit | edit source]

The Perforators do not spawn on their own. The player can summon them manually with Bloody Worm Food or by killing a Perforator Cyst while in The Crimson.

Behavior[edit | edit source]

The Perforator Hive will hover above the player, shooting projectiles and spawning Perforator worms from off-screen as it loses health. The Perforators all behave like typical worms, burrowing through blocks and charging at the player, two of the worms additionally having a unique property. Each Perforator has different sizes, stats, appearances, and speeds.

The worms move progressively faster and have greater turning speeds as they lose health. If they're too far away from the player, they gain the ability to fly in order to return to the fight or reach an elevated platform more easily.

Leaving the Crimson biome will cause the Perforator Hive to enrage, making it invulnerable to all damage until the player returns. The worms will remain vulnerable, however.

The Perforator Hive[edit | edit source]

  • Periodically shoots volleys of either blood geyser or ichor glob projectiles, which inflict the Burning Blood and Ichor debuffs respectively. The Perforator Hive shoots 10 / 12 / 14 / 16 projectiles per volley.
    • The projectiles are shot slightly upward, which then spread out and fall down to cover a large area. The projectiles are horizontally parallel and are always shot in groups of 20.
    • The projectiles are initially unable to pass through blocks but become able to do so 2 seconds after they are shot.

The Small Perforator[edit | edit source]

  • Spawns when the Perforator Hive reaches 70% health.
  • This small worm is much faster than the other two.
  • This worm has 6 / 8 / 9 / 10 segments in total.

The Medium Perforator[edit | edit source]

  • Spawns when the Perforator Hive reaches 40% health.
  • This medium-sized worm is slower but stronger than the Small Perforator.
  • Similar to the Eater of Worlds, each segment has an individual health pool and it can split up into smaller worms when a body segment is killed.
  • Each segment has an HP of 160 / 223 / 251, and there are 10 / 14 / 16 / 18 segments in total.

The Large Perforator[edit | edit source]

  • Spawns when the Perforator Hive reaches 10% health.
  • This large worm is the most powerful and durable of the three, but it is also the slowest.
  • It can burrow into the ground and lunge towards the player.
  • This worm has 16 / 22 / 25 / 28 segments in total.

In Expert Mode[edit | edit source]

  • The Perforator Hive becomes invulnerable to damage while the Large Perforator is alive.
  • The Perforator Hive shoots 12 projectiles per volley instead of 10.
  • The Perforators move and turn faster.

In Revengeance Mode[edit | edit source]

  • The Perforator Hive shoots projectiles more often and attempts to ram the player.
    • The Hive will not ram if there is one Perforator alive, but will gain slightly increased acceleration.
    • The Hive gains more speed if more than one Perforator is alive, further increasing if smaller worms are alive.
  • The Perforator Hive shoots 14 projectiles per volley instead of 12.
  • The Perforators shoot projectiles more often, and the projectiles travel faster.

In Death Mode[edit | edit source]

  • The Perforator Hive shoots projectiles even more often and has increased aggression.
  • The Perforator Hive shoots 16 projectiles per volley instead of 14.
  • The Perforator Hive will hover closer to the player if more than one Perforator is alive.
  • The Perforators are larger and have more segments.

During the Boss Rush[edit | edit source]

  • All difficulty mode changes, regardless of the world's difficulty mode.
  • The Perforator Hive can exist outside of the Crimson without becoming enraged.
  • The Perforator Hive moves quicker.
  • The Perforators move significantly faster.

Aftermath[edit | edit source]

Resistances[edit | edit source]

  • All Perforator segments take reduced damage from non-minion piercing projectiles in Expert Mode. Projectile damage is divided by the number of times it pierces. Infinite piercing deals 50% damage.
  • All segments reduce damage from grenade-type projectiles by 80%. A list of affected projectiles is below.

Tips[edit | edit source]

For elaborate strategies on defeating the Perforators, including Weapon and Arena recommendations, see Guide:The Perforators strategies.

General[edit | edit source]

  • Building a few layers of platforms across The Crimson will make avoiding the Perforators much easier.
    • The Perforators have extremely high speed when tunneling horizontally, and can tunnel through platforms if they reach them. Keeping platforms around 15 blocks above the ground and each other can help prevent this.
    • Be careful: If platforms are too high the player might leave The Crimson while standing on them, enraging the boss and making the Hive and worms invincible.
  • The projectiles that the Hive shoots are destroyed by blocks, meaning the player can stand below a thick ceiling of blocks to make the fight easier.
    • The player can also use the roof of a Crimson Chasm to block the projectiles. However, this is risky due to blocks being all around the player, allowing the worms to easily attack.
  • When a Perforator worm is spawned, the player should target it until it's dead while avoiding damaging the Hive, this will make sure the player isn't overwhelmed by multiple worms at once.
    • The worms will drop hearts on death, the player should remember where they killed the worms so they can use these hearts later unless they are hurt enough to warrant their immediate use.

Weapons & Equipment[edit | edit source]

  • The Perforator Hive will consistently float above the player, so weapons with projectiles are recommended as getting close is extremely difficult without high jump speed and vertical movement accessories.
    • If using the above strategy of having a roof to destroy projectiles, a weapon that can hit through blocks or that can set up "traps" to lure the Hive into will be more effective.
  • The Seashine Sword, Enchanted Sword and Amidias' Trident have projectiles which are effective against The Perforator Hive.
    • The Riptide is also a good option, especially when dealing with the worms.
  • The Barinade is an extremely powerful bow that can quickly decimate both The Perforator Hive and its worms.
  • The Hellwing Staff and Flare Bolt are great weapons for dealing with the Hive and its worms.
    • The Flare Bolt, like all "Bolt" weapons, is best used in an enclosed space where the projectiles can bounce. The player can encase their arena in blocks to allow for this.
    • Luring the worms into several Demon Scythe shots can deal insane damage and kill them quickly.
  • The Magical Conch can deal incredible amounts of damage to the worms in a short period of time, but struggles with hitting the Hive.
    • The Seabound Staff can be used for hitting the Hive due to its summons being able to fly.
  • The Seafoam Bomb can deal an extreme amount of damage to the worms due to its lingering effect.
  • The Bouncing Eyeball can be used for damaging the hive, doing moderate damage.
  • The Crimson Flask accessory helps with survivability by giving +3 defense and +7% damage reduction whilst in the Crimson.
  • As the Perforators are segmented, using piercing weapons, such as Jester's Arrows, can make short work of them even in the early game.

Miscellaneous[edit | edit source]

  • During Hardmode, The Perforators can be fought to get an effective amount of Ichor. This is a highly effective way to get Ichor in a Corruption world, as The Perforators can be fought on a Crimson island.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The Perforators' theme is Blood Coagulant, which was composed by the artists DM DOKURO and SixteenInMono.
    • If the Calamity Music add-on mod is disabled, Boss 2 will play instead.
  • The Perforators could be considered the Crimson's version of the Eater of Worlds, while The Hive Mind could be considered the Corruption's version of the Brain of Cthulhu.
  • If the player deals sufficiently high damage in a short time, the Perforator Hive can be killed before its invincibility activates. This causes the worms to move away off-screen and despawn.
  • Previously, when any worm was killed, several smaller worms known as Perforator Mini would spawn.

Lore[edit | edit source]

Emerging from the fleshy carcass that is the crimson, the Perforator hive trails its carrion-like protrusions across the ground in search of purity— and prey. Once a victim is detected, its spawn, massive tunneling worms which burrow violently into dirt and bloody tissue alike, rapidly encroach upon the unfortunate target to tear it to pieces.
