Providence Trophy "The profaned flame blazes fiercely..." Providence Trophy

Providence, the Profaned Goddess (Japanese: プロビデンス、冒涜の女神 Purobidensu, bōtoku no megami) is a Godseeker Mode boss fought in either The Hallow or The Underworld biomes.

Defeating Providence will provide the player with Divine Bars, as well as the Rune of Kos used to summon the Sentinels of the Devourer. Additionally, Tarragon Ore will start dropping from Rear Gars, and Calamitas, the Brimstone Elemental, the Ravager and Brimstone Crag enemies will be buffed and start to drop Bloodstone.

Spawn[]

Providence does not spawn on her own and requires the player to summon her with the Profaned Core while in The Hallow or The Underworld biome. Her battle will change significantly depending on whether she is summoned at Day or at Night.

When summoned, a brief animation plays where Providence appears in a multicolored aurora of light before attacking; the aurora will be yellow and pink if summoned in The Hallow, red and yellow if summoned in the Underworld, or blue and purple if summoned at night. Providence will also play a sound resembling a fiery explosion instead of the regular boss roar.

Behavior[]

Providence herself deals no contact damage, instead utilizing her wide array of projectiles, as well as minions, to deal damage. Providence's attacks and behavior vary depending on which phase and health she is currently in. She switches through these multiple phases pseudo-randomly, spending several seconds in one before choosing another.

If the player exits the Hallow or the Underworld for more than 5 seconds while fighting Providence, she will become completely immune to damage until they return. If still alive at nighttime, she will also act as if Boss Rush is active along with gaining a greenish-white tint to her crystals, projectiles, and wings.

In all Phases[]

  • Providence and her attacks become more aggressive as her health gets lower.
    • If the player exits the Hallow or the Underworld, the Guardians will take very little damage from attacks until they return.
  • Straying too far away from Providence will inflict the Holy Inferno debuff onto the player, causing damage over time which exponentially increases in severity and darken the screen. This effect ends once the player returns to Providence's proximity.
  • Upon reaching 75% of her full health, Providence can now use an attack depending on the biome she was summoned in.
    • In the Underworld, Providence can now summon a giant crystal at certain points in her attack pattern that follows directly above the player.
      • The giant crystal periodically rains down 10 smaller crystal shards, which deal damage to the player if touched.
      • The crystal will disappear after 60 / 35 seconds.
    • In the Hallow, Providence is capable of entering her Holy Ray Phase.
  • When reaching 34% of her full health, Providence will spawn weaker versions of the Profaned Guardians.
    • While the Healer Guardian is alive, Providence's health will periodically recover 0.5% health (1650 / 2640 / 3000 HP)
      • Each heal occurs every 2 / 1.5 seconds. Heals occur twice as often if all three guardians are alive, and half as often if the Healer Guardian is the only one alive.
  • Upon reaching 15% of her full health, Providence attacks more aggressively and uses every attack possible towards the player.

Phases[]

Blast Phase[]

  • Providence flies back and forth above the player and fires massive HolyBlastHoly Blasts that erupt into HolyFire2Holy Flames on impact. The Holy Flames spread out in all directions before briefly homing in on the player.

Flame Phase[]

  • Providence flies directly above the player and drops HolyFireHoly Flames that stop in the air, then split into more Holy Flames which travel either horizontally or vertically.

Cocoon Phase[]

  • Providence hides in her cocoon, increasing her DR to 90%, and reducing the distance needed to trigger the Holy Inferno debuff if the Profaned Guardians are not alive.
  • While hiding in her cocoon she can do one of two attacks.
    • She emits waves of damaging Cocoon Stars, which reduce the player's health by 100 / 150 / 180 / 200 health on contact. This is treated as negative healing, which means that it is unaffected by defense, damage reduction, or immunity frames, but they still take away adrenaline.
      • She also fires Cocoon Healing Stars, which have a 25% / 16.67% / 12.5% chance to spawn and will heal the player for 35 / 50 health on contact. These stars do not take away adrenaline, are more vibrant, and are interspersed with the damaging stars.
    • She fires barrages of HolySpearHoly Spears from herself in a pattern, one barrage is directed towards the player, is slower and has a different color.
  • After the Cocoon Star attack ends, a status message stating "The air is burning..." appears in the chat and the Icarus' Folly debuff is applied to all players near the boss for 50 seconds. Icarus' Folly cripples mobility by decreasing wing flight time by 33%, and blocking infinite flight. It can be avoided if the player is submerged in Water or Honey while she is inflicting the debuff.

Bomb Phase[]

  • Providence flies directly above the player and drops HolyBombHoly Bombs that linger in place. Holy Bombs continually emit HolyFlareHoly Flares that drift towards the player.

Molten Phase[]

  • Providence flies back and forth above the player and fires MoltenBlastMolten Blasts that explode on impact into several MoltenGlobMolten Globs. The Molten Globs stay on the ground for some time and deal damage if touched.

Holy Ray Phase[]

  • Occurs when Providence drops below 75% health if she was summoned in the Hallow.
  • Providence's DR is increased to 90%.
  • Providence's movement speed will slow and she'll begin to charge up energy, then, shortly after, she fires a continuous ProvidenceHolyRayHoly Ray near the player. The ray sweeps across the area in an arc and deals massive damage upon contact with the player.

In Expert Mode[]

  • Providence moves slightly faster and has a slightly higher rate of fire.
  • The Cocoon Healing Stars heal for 50 instead of 35.

In Revengeance Mode[]

  • During her Holy Ray phase, Providence now fires two Holy Rays instead of one, which converge inward towards each other and leave a small gap in between.
  • Providence's movement and firing methods during the Blast, Molten, and Bomb phases are modified.
  • Providence continuously increases in speed when flying in the same direction for longer than 2.5 seconds, up to a maximum of roughly doubled speed, making running and kiting strategies more difficult.
    • She returns to normal speed upon changing direction.
  • The Healer Guardian heals Providence every 1.5 seconds instead of 2.

In Death Mode[]

  • Providence has a new, different attack pattern which is significantly more difficult and harder to predict.
  • She has decreased attack delay as her HP decreases.
  • She will no longer summon Cocoon Healing Stars while hiding in her cocoon.
  • The Healer Guardian heals Providence every 0.5 seconds instead of 1.5.
  • The crystal will disappear after 35 seconds instead of a minute.

At Night or in Malice Mode[]

  • All difficulty mode changes, regardless of the world's difficulty mode.
  • Providence always acts as if she is in both the Hallow and the Underworld, and is therefore able to both summon the crystal and enter her Holy Ray phase.
  • Providence can use her crystal and Holy Ray attacks regardless of health.
  • The Holy Ray fires 4 converging lasers instead of 2 below 50% health.
  • Providence gains up to 375% Reactive Damage Reduction.
  • The crystal will disappear after 3.5 seconds, firing small shards every 0.5 seconds, 10 times faster than during the day.
  • She moves even faster and has an even higher rate of fire.
  • She takes one less second to switch between each phase.
  • Her attacks will inflict Moon Burnt instead of Holy Flames.
  • The Profaned Guardians phase is omitted.

During the Boss Rush[]

  • All difficulty mode changes, regardless of the world's difficulty mode.
  • Providence always acts as if she is in both the Hallow and the Underworld, and is therefore able to summon the crystal and enter her Holy Ray phase.
    • She will no longer become invulnerable when outside of those biomes.
  • She moves even faster and has an even higher rate of fire.

Aftermath[]

Notes[]

  • As the Healer Guardian restores her health, her attacks reduce in aggressiveness.
    • If she is brought back above 75% health, the giant crystal will disappear shortly after and she will no longer enter her Holy Ray Phase until she is brought back below 75% health.
  • While Providence is alive, the world is tinted an orange color. This will only happen if the Lighting option in the Settings Menu is set to "Color" or "White".
    • If it is night, the world is instead tinted a blue color.
  • During her spawn animation, she will have significant amounts of damage reduction to prevent players from taking advantage of it.
  • Whether Providence drops the Elysian Wings or Elysian Aegis is based off of which biome Providence is summoned in.
    • Elysian Wings will not drop if Providence was summoned in the Underworld, even if the player was also considered to be within the Hallow biome when Providence was summoned.
    • However, Providence will drop both items when defeated entirely at night, regardless of the biome she was spawned in.
  • If Providence takes any damage during the day, her night-exclusive items will not drop.
  • When Providence is defeated, the remaining Profaned Guardians will vanish immediately without dropping anything.
  • The Coldheart Icicle does not activate its effect on Providence, instead only dealing 1 damage.
  • If summoned in Malice Mode, she will always be in her nighttime appearence, even if it is daytime.
  • Defeating Providence at nighttime will count as defeating her in Malice Mode regardless of whether or not it was actually activated, causing her to drop Profaned Moonlight Dye.

Tips[]

For more elaborate strategies on defeating Providence, the Profaned Goddess, including weapon and arena recommendations, see Guide:Providence, the Profaned Goddess strategies.
  • Pay close attention to your surroundings. This fight can potentially be very chaotic and hard to manage, so extra care must be taken to keeping track of and dodging projectiles.
  • Focus on the guardians whenever they spawn, their varied effects can make Providence a nightmare en masse.
    • This tip is invalid when fighting her at Night or in Malice Mode.
  • When Providence enters her Cocoon Phase, she will hide in her cocoon and emanate stars. When she does this, try to run into the green stars, as these will heal you.
    • Try not to stray too far away from her during this phase, as the projectiles speed up over time and can become very hard to dodge.
    • Take extra care to dodge the orange damaging stars, as they can potentially kill the player very quickly due to their ignoring of immunity frames.
    • In Death Mode or Malice Mode, the healing green stars do not spawn, and are instead replaced by normal stars.
  • When Providence is in her Holy Ray Phase, her movement speed will drastically decrease, the player should use this to their advantage to easily dodge it.
    • Dodging the ray should be the players primary objective during this phase due to the fact that the ray can quickly deplete the player’s health, and during this phase, Providence will take minimal damage from the player due to her increased defensive stats.
    • Similar to the Moon Lord's Phantasmal Deathray, Providence's Holy Rays cannot pass through blocks, making blocks useful for dodging.
    • The Rod of Discord or the Normality Relocator can be used to dodge the rays if needed.
  • Having a multi-layered arena can make the fight much easier as the player can land on platforms to reset their flight time.
    • This is especially valuable when the player is afflicted with the Icarus' Folly debuff as it reduces flight time, movement speed, and vertical flying speed and helps avoid the molten globs.
  • Placing actuated hallowed blocks in the middle of the player’s arena can ensure that the player stays in the Hallow while fighting Providence.
  • Summons will not attack Providence while she is firing her Holy Rays, so it is better to wait to use Rage and Adrenaline until immediately afterwards.
  • Running in a straight line horizontally can help dodge the crystal at night.
  • When Providence is near 40% hp, waiting for a Cocoon phase might be helpful to avoid the Profaned Guardians spawning during one as well as to gain a better position and get Adrenaline to quickly dispatch of the Guardians.
  • Since Providence will remain stationary during her cocoon phase, it is especially dangerous for the player to venture far, as Holy Inferno can quickly eliminate them if they are already on low health.
    • However, don't go to close to Providence either, as Holy Spears and Cocoon Stars will be shot too close together to make avoiding them easier.

Trivia[]

  • Providence's theme is Unholy Insurgency, which was made by the artist DM DOKURO.
    • The definition of insurgency is "an active revolt or uprising," so the name of the song could refer to the player rising up to strike down Providence or Providence rising up to cleanse the world of all sin.
    • If the Calamity Music add-on mod is disabled, the Moon Lord's theme will play instead.
    • The old theme for Providence used to be the track Adventure's End from the game Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. This was changed due to copyright-related reasons.
    • A few weeks before Unholy Insurgency was introduced, Providence's theme was changed to Siren's Call (Seafoam Mix), which was also composed by DM DOKURO.
  • The word "Providence" is often used as a name synonymous with God, particularly the Christian God.
  • The name of the debuff "Icarus' Folly" references Icarus from Greek mythology, who used wings created with wax to achieve flight. However, he tested his limits and flew too close to the sun, melting his wings and causing him to fall back to Earth to his death.
  • Providence is the counterpart of the Moon Lord, as stated by the Sea King.
  • As mentioned by the Sea King, Providence once defeated Yharim but in consequence became a fraction of her previous power.
  • If the player dies from the damaging Cocoon Stars, it will show the death message as "<PlayerName> burst into sinless ash.", even if Armageddon is active.
  • If the player dies under the effects of the Holy Inferno debuff, the unique death message will say "<PlayerName> was turned to ashes by the Profaned Goddess."
  • The Healer Guardian is coded to inflict the On Fire! debuff on contact, but it never inflicts the debuff as it has no contact damage.
  • She was previously named "Providence, the Profaned God". This was changed due to Providence being referred to as female in lore entries and by the developers, and "goddess" is the feminine word for "god".
  • If the Boss Checklist Mod is installed, her unique despawn message will be "The Profaned Goddess vanishes in a burning blaze."
  • Providence is known to have a special variant during a blood moon.

Providence, the Profaned Goddess is a post-Moon Lord boss that is fought after defeating the Profaned Guardians and, in most cases, the Dragonfolly. To fight her the player must use a Profaned Core in either The Hallow or The Underworld during the daytime.

This guide will mention items exclusive to Expert and Revengeance Mode with no special formatting and will follow the intended progression.

Terrain Preparation[]

Providence requires a lot of room. A good arena for the fight will require flattening out a large area and making at least one long platform (try to set each platform 30 blocks apart from each other). Platforms are useful as molten globs launch up and will stay on the higher ones, allowing the player to more safely navigate the lower parts of the arena without worrying about the hazard.

In the Underworld if you don't want to create a huge platform arena and don't care about the terrain, you can use Dynamite or similar explosives to demolish it. Furthermore, you can equip Angel Treads or any of its upgrades to use the lava as a floor. However, this can require a lot of gold to buy the explosives, and beware that the Molten Globs she spawns can be difficult to see on top of the lava. Another option is to use the Onyx Excavator Key and the Drill Containment Unit in unison.

This arena can later be used to fight Signus, Envoy of the Devourer as well. If you decide to make an arena like this, Zen Potions can be very useful to reduce the amount of enemies interfering with your progress.

Great movement speed and agility are crucial for the fight as Providence's projectiles and the Guardians are very quick. This is important especially in the later parts of the fight as Providence's projectiles increase in rate and velocity as her health lowers.

Gearing Up[]

Armor[]

Lunar armors are the preferred choice for all classes.

Accessories[]

  • Lunar Wings or Seraph Tracers are the best wings available for the player and should be prioritized.
    • Vortex Booster and Nebula Mantle’s hover can be very useful for outrunning Providence's slower projectiles.
    • A long bridge-type arena will pair well with the Seraph Tracers for this boss.
  • The Void of Extinction is a great classless accessory as it gives the same boost as a class emblem, along with extra effects.
  • The Destroyer Emblem has good damage and critical chance boosts.
  • The Community is a powerful item as it provides stat increases which get increased as the player progresses through the mod.
  • The Absorber is another good all-class accessory due to the great movement and healing stat boost it provides.
  • Blood Pact provides a good survivability buff, which is especially good because the anti-healing stars' damage cannot be increased or decreased.
  • Statis' Ninja Belt is a great accessory as it provides great movement buffs, a long dash, as well as dodge chance.
  • Asgard's Valor provides additional defense and immunity to knockback, which can prevent the player from being knocked into other projectiles after being hit.
  • The Celestial Shell is a good accessory for Melee players as it provides great melee boosts during the day.
  • Statis' Curse and the Star-Tainted Generator are great accessories for Summoners as they both provide a buff to both the number of minions as well as minion damage.
    • Statis' Blessing can also be used as it provides similar boosts to its upgrade, except for the Shadowflame debuff, which Providence is immune to.
    • Since the effects of Statis' Blessing stack with Statis' Curse, the player can equip both alongside the Star-Tainted Generator for a total of 7 extra minions and a 27% increase in damage.
  • The Sigil of Calamitas is a great accessory for Mages as it gives several buffs for damage and mana consumption.
    • It also increases the user's max mana by 100.
  • The Artemis Emblem is a great Ranged accessory as it provides several range buffs and reduces ammo consumption.
    • It also increases life regen by 2 and Defense by 5.
  • The Dark God's Sheath can be a good accessory for Rogue players, provided they can gain stealth to perform stealth strikes.
    • It also provides several passive Rogue bonuses.

Weapons[]

Melee[]

  • The Ark of the Elements is solid against Providence due to its parry and homing projectiles, however it provides less DPS than other options.
    • The Swordsplosion works even better because of its higher damage.
  • The Devastation is a powerful melee weapon that performs well when in the Hallow biome, though is it difficult to aim correctly.
  • The Stellar Striker is a close ranged option that can deal colossal amounts of damage.
  • The Elemental Shiv is an excellent choice, having decent DPS and homing capabilities. Its additional blades work very well for the Guardian phase.
  • The Elemental Lance is a good weapon to use against Providence due to its projectile split and her large hitbox.
  • The Terrarian is the best yoyo available, and if used properly can provide solid DPS.
  • The Solstice Claymore can be a decent choice against Providence if aimed well due to its high DPS.
  • The Greatsword of Judgement is a great choice against Providence, as its projectile homes in, and it has high DPS.

Ranged[]

Mage[]

  • The Elemental Ray is a good option, dealing good DPS with a low mana cost.
  • Genisis is a great weapon for the fight as it deals high DPS to Providence herself. However, it does require the player to get close to Providence to perform at its best.
    • Although it has incredibly high firing speed, it also has much lower base damage.
  • Rouge Slash is very powerful, sporting both high base damage and high firing speed.
  • The Ultra Liquidator can devastate Providence due to its incredibly high base damage.
    • It also inflicts Ichor and Cursed Inferno, neither of which Providence is immune to, greatly impeding her defense.
      • This effect can be used in conjunction with other mage weapons for much more damage and even with weapons of other classes, because the debuff will have the same effect.
      • Providence's cocoons are a great time to use this effect.
  • The Effervescence is also a great choice, having a very large bubble spray with high dps. Note that this pairs best with defense penetration.
  • The Nuclear Fury's Typhoons work really well for the Guardians, as the homing typhoons in all directions mean the player doesn't have to aim, and can instead focus on dodging.
    • However, it is not a good choice for the rest of the fight, as it does very little damage to Providence herself.
  • The Mad Alchemist's Cocktail Glove is an extremely effective weapon against Providence; dealing high damage along with its additional projectile with the primary fire. While the alternate fire also deals high damage while inflicting several debuffs.
  • The Last Prism is also a great option, although it can burn through mana very quickly.

Summoner[]

  • The Elemental Axe is a powerful Summoner weapon due to its high minion speed and damage.
  • The Tactical Plague Engine is also a powerful option but it requires a lot of ammo to use due to its high fire rate.
  • The Energy Staff is a good sentry item to use as a support to other minions due to its high damage.

Rogue[]

  • The Elemental Disk performs very well.
  • The Utensil Poker is a good choice due to the buff it provides when hitting an enemy.
    • Its stealth strike can do a lot of damage up close.
  • Lunar Kunai can be utilised because of its homing aspect doing consistent damage on Providence.
  • Hell's Sun can be used to effectively make the arena into a minefield for the boss.
    • Combining this along with other rogue weapons can be used to damage Providence when she spawns the guardians, allowing the player to focus on slaying the guardians with other weapons.

Miscellaneous[]

  • The Well Fed buff provides a useful all around stat boost.
  • The Yharim's Stimulants buff provides another strong all around stat boost.
  • The Bumbledoge mount has a high running speed that can help you keep up with the boss.
    • Be wary when using this mount though, as its vertical ascent is slow and thus can make it challenging to dodge projectiles.
  • The Golden Gun, Yanmei's Knife and Betsy's Wrath can provide crippling debuffs.

The Fight[]

Blast Phase[]

Providence will fly back and forth above you and will fire massive Holy Blasts which burst into Holy Flames on impact. The Holy Flames will spread out in all directions before homing in on you for a brief moment. Moving quickly and rapidly changing direction can prevent the projectiles from hitting you as the Holy Blasts are slow and the Holy Flames are quick but will only home for a very short time.

Flame Phase[]

Providence will hover above you and fire Holy Flames that stop in mid-air and split into more Holy Flames that travel either horizontally or vertically. To make this phase easier, avoid being directed to the left/right or directly above/below the initial Holy Flames.

Cocoon Phase[]

Providence will stop moving and hide in her cocoon, greatly increasing her damage reduction. While she's in her cocoon phase she can use one of two attacks:

Cocoon Stars[]

Providence will emit waves of orange Cocoon Stars and green Cocoon Healing Stars. The cocoon stars will start spreading from her in a tight group and will grow faster and wider apart as they travel. Staying close to Providence will ensure you have enough time to react to the stars' positions, though you need to also keep some distance so the stars will be spaced out enough for you to be able to weave between them. The orange Cocoon Stars cause damage by "Healing" with negative hit points, thus ignores all defense stats. At the end of the attack, a status message stating "The air is burning..." will appear and you will be inflicted with the Icarus' Folly debuff for 50 seconds. The debuff cripples your mobility as it reduces wing time by 75%, decreases your horizontal speed and prevents infinite flight. However, you will not be inflicted with the debuff if you are in a pool of water or honey at the end of the attack. In Death Mode, the green Healing Cocoon Stars won't appear and will instead be replaced by more damaging Cocoon Stars.

Holy Spears[]

Providence will fire a barrage of Holy Spears from herself while other horizontally-moving Holy Spears spawn in the area around the player. The stream of Holy Spears will increase in frequency as Providence's health gets lower. Moving in a tight circle around Providence during this attack should be enough to dodge it successfully.

Molten Phase[]

Providence will fly above you, similarly to the Blast Phase, and fire Molten Blasts that explode on impact into several Molten Globs that stay on the ground for some time before disappearing. If you prepared several platforms in the arena, the Blobs will get trapped on higher platforms, making your main concern avoiding the Molten Blasts. However, if you didn't prepare platforms in the arena, concentrating the blobs in one location can make this phase and the following phases easier as it gives you more space to move around in.

Bomb Phase[]

Providence will fly directly above you and drop Holy Bombs that linger in place. The Holy Bombs will continually emit Holy Flames that drift towards you. This phase greatly resembles the attack of a Profaned Energy. Going in one direction and then flying over the Holy Bombs should make this stage rather simple to dodge.

Holy Ray Phase[]

This occurs when Providence drops below 75% health if she was summoned in the Hallow. Like her cocoon phase, her DR increases substantially. This phase can be discerned by Providence slowing down along with a sound cue of her charging up energy. The Holy Ray deals massive damage compared to the other projectiles, thus, it's better to run into another projectile than to get hit by the ray. This phase is very similar to the Moon Lord's Death Ray Attack.

In Expert Mode or below, dodging this attack can easily be done by flying around Providence in a circle or teleporting to the other side of the ray using the Normality Relocator. In Revengeance Mode or above, Providence will now fire two Holy Rays instead of one. The rays converge inwards towards each other like a pair of scissors, leaving a small gap in between. To dodge the attack, you need to thread the gap between the rays or teleport behind one of the rays in the same manner as for Normal or Expert.

Guardians[]

When Providence reaches 34% health, she will summon weaker versions of the Profaned Guardians, which act almost identically to the bosses themselves. Their strategy is to be combined with the strategy of any attack Providence uses while they're still alive. While the Healer guardian is alive, Providence will periodically recover 0.5% of her full health. The heals occur every 2 / 1.5 / 0.5 seconds. The heals also change frequency depending on how many guardians are alive, occurring twice as often if all three are alive, and half as often if the Healer Guardian is the only one still alive.

When leaving The Hallow or The Underworld, the guardians will take very little damage until you return to the biome.

General Tips[]

Unlike other bosses, Providence herself doesn't deal any contact damage, so there's no need to avoid her sprite. However, do avoid the center of her sprite as that's the spawn point of most of the projectiles she fires at you.

When reaching 75% health when summoned in The Underworld, Providence will summon a giant crystal above you, which will rain down 10 smaller crystal shards that damage the player if touched. The crystal will follow you around, staying right above you, disappearing after 60 / 35 seconds.

Providence's projectiles will increase in speed and frequency as her health gets lower. Upon reaching 15% health, Providence will attack much more aggressively and use every attack possible towards you. Going too far from Providence will inflict you with the Holy Inferno debuff, causing damage over time which will rapidly increase in severity. This effect will end once you return to Providence's proximity.

In Revengeance mode and above, Providence will continuously increase in speed when flying in the same direction for longer than 2.5 seconds, up to roughly double her original speed, making running and kiting strategies more difficult. However, her speed will return to normal upon changing direction.

In Death mode, Providence will have decreased attack delay as her health decreases, which can pose a problem for less experienced players.
